Program Notes: Sue was commissioned by Dr. William Baker as a gift to his sister-in-law, Susan Miller. Susan was described to me as a self-sacrificing woman with a strong sense of social justice and a strong intellect. She writes poetry, and cares very deeply about family. Her son, Michael Miller, is a trumpeter in the Cleveland Orchestra.
With this in mind, I wrote this short piece for solo trumpet intended to portray some of the qualities of her character.
